Designer/Junior Designer, Octopus

Who we are and what we do

Octopus Publishing Group is an award-winning and leading book publisher of non-fiction in the fields of food and drink, design, wellness, smart thinking, popular culture, gardening, craft, photography, sport, humour and reference. The group comprises of several imprints including Conran Octopus, Hamlyn, Mitchell Beazley, Aster, Philip’s, Spruce, Ilex, Miller’s, Cassell, Kyle Books, Summersdale and Pyramid who all seek to produce the very best books in non-fiction publishing.

We publish 4 colour titles across gift, cookery, mind body spirit and popular reference – some titles for non-traditional retailers (including stationery, gift, fashion and homewares market-leaders), but also titles for the traditional book trade.

What you’ll be doing

We are looking for a Designer or Junior Designer to join our small team which publishes and repackages a wide range of titles on tight turnaround times and budgets for a varied customer and retailer base.

You will work with freelancers and illustrators (briefing and checking work) where appropriate and when budget allows but in most cases, they will be completing projects to templates and briefs you have created.

You will be working very closely with the Publisher and Editor to produce most titles in house (with many concepts generated by the team)  –  it’s a fun and demanding role that offers an unusual amount of freedom, creativity and responsibility.

Who we’re looking for

You’ll be the sole designer and your role is to generate designs – both cover and layouts – for titles which in most cases will publish within 6 months. You will need to work under pressure and effectively on concurrent projects, with the ability to produce compelling and commercial designs for new titles whilst completing print-ready files for signed-off projects.

You will need excellent market understanding and an awareness of design trends so that titles are designed with a sensitivity to retailers’ merchandising and consumer expectation, but also the ability to respond to briefs that meet the requirements of a more traditional audience.

Applicants must have a demonstrable skill in layout design, an eye for typography and illustration. Previous experience in book publishing is preferable, but not essential and we welcome applicants with previous experience in design for print publications.

 What we offer

In return, we offer a competitive salary and benefits package together with a creative and exciting working environment. Holiday leave is set to 25 days and Bank holidays.
